    • “create that many 1/1 black Insect creature tokens.”

I think you’re right Jai. Any one else care to weigh in?

I’m seeing some cool combo possibilities with this card and things like exemplar of strength.

Drop Nest. Drop Exemplar, kill something with that has recurrence, and you’ve got a 4/4 and 3 1/1’s for the 1G that Exemplar costs.

Then those scarabs are targets for other creatures that dole out -1/-1 counters and play with power/toughness ahead of curve.

It turns your self inflicted -1/-1 counters into scarabs. Seemingly lots of scarabs. This could be cool with anointer priest, harvest season, and Throne of the god Pharaoh

    • Thanks for the review! It really made my six-hour drive! I hope the second part will be online for my drive back.
Also, I believe Lull (also from Urza’s Saga) was the first Fog effect with cycling on it.

  1. I think that Oashra Cultivator is going to be better than your initial review. In the -1/-1 counters deck it ramps you for 1-3 creatures. Because the creatures are undercosted if the counters are placed on a different creature Oashra is like a 1 drop mana dork that can accelerate your creatures 3 times. You can for example play the 1G 4/4 on turn 2 with no counters on it or cast 3 other below rate creatures. At some point after playing 1 or 2 of the -1 counter creatures you can chump block and sacrifice to land-cycle and in the late game it is a 4 mana land-cycle/Chump card to thin your deck of 1 land (Not a huge benefit but not entirely dead.) Because the -1 counter deck is the only deck that will want it Oashra could be a good late pick if you end up in that deck.

    • Well, you cant play the 2 drop’s counters on this guy, but I came into the comments to point out they missed the point on her.

  2. Sixth sense is not keen sense or curiosity, you can play it on opponent’s creatures as well, which makes it more playable. And it only triggers on combat damage.

  3. Hey guys, I just wanted to say thank you so much for doing these. Your analysis and banter about the cards is really really helpful. The common/uncommon reviews are CRITICAL to me enjoying the pre-release sealed tournaments. Thank you thank you thank you.

  4. I think the key with cards like Doomed Dissenter is that they were put in the format specifically to be targeted by your own -1/-1 counters. So if you play Doomed Dissenter and then Baleful Ammit, that’s pretty good. You still just got a 2/2 for 2 and a clean Ammit. So, I think that point went a little bit unmentioned in the set review. I know when they recorded this they didn’t have the benefit of play time with the cards, but after watching the pre-prerelease there are A LOT of -1/-1 counters flying around. A lot of the best cards have that cost. So I think -1/-1 counter sinks like Doomed Dissenter go up in value if that’s the kind of deck you’re building. I’m not saying it makes the card great, but when you look at something like Ancient Crab, to me I’m just making crab stew with all of my -1/-1 counters.

  5. I think you were wrong about the best case for Vizier of remedies. The best case scenario is that you’re playing a w/g or b/g deck and have creatures that put -1/-1 counters on your creatures. It negates those downsides.

  6. A note that came to mind about Illusory Wrappings during the review: It makes target creature’s BASE stats 0/2. In a format with a lot of -1/-1 counters, and especially against decks that are working -1/-1 counter synergies, this could be straight-up removal, and in the right situations against those decks it seems like this could seriously mess up your opponent’s rhythm. Seems like it could be a good foil against Decimator Beetle’s ability too, where you could take out your opponent’s reserves of counters that they want to throw at you. Maybe those situations will be fewer and farther between than I’m thinking, and it’s not like you guys rated it BADLY by any stretch. Love the podcast, thank you guys for doing it!

  7. In my sealed tournament this weekend I recognized the raw power level of Nest of Scarabs. This card will have a very very big showing in limited. Especially with their big brother beetle buddy Decimator Beetle! Love this set so far, and thanks for the pointers guys. Definitely recognized the level ups in my play this pre-release. Thanks!
