Limited Resources 288 – In-Game Decision Making Process

This week on Limited Resources Marshall and Luis dive deep into LSV’s process for making in-game decisions. This is a complex topic, and not an easy one to approach for someone who has played as long as Luis has. LR 273, Have a Plan, is recommended listening in conjunction with this episode. We hope you enjoy this Level-Up episode of LR!

  1. Great show guys, I love the Level-Up episodes. The behavioral science behind the credit card dinner game makes up an entire chapter in Predictably Irrational, by Dan Ariely. Your explanation is dead on. If Blink made an impact on your thinking you will love his books too.

Thanks for doing the show, I really enjoy it.

  2. You make the point that it’s social science, there’s some ambiguity, and that’s interesting because there’s a lot of research in “loss aversion” that seems to say basically the opposite of what you were saying about how people value paying for something vs. getting it for free. Maybe it’s that Magic players tend to think of EV more and can thus counteract their own loss aversion (although why would that go so far in the opposite direction?) or maybe it’s just that LSV values a meal so much higher than market price. Either way, fascinating stuff.

  3. Drink (some water) every time Luis uses more than three numbers in a single sentence. This was great, taught me/reinforced some simple things I still stumble over, but wow, it was hard for me to visualize what was going on sometimes! 🙂

  4. I get the feeling the LSV would like to eat with me; I typically just offer to pay for everyone’s food that I’m with.
