Brian’s Ode to the Premature GG

I’ve been working on some experimental poetry between rounds.  I think it helps me keep focused.  Wanna hear some?
Lo, what Therosian terrors await me?
The Simic mage with monsters as yet unseen, slinging spells deftly, surveying and summoning.
My own plans foundering, struggling to make purchase, scrabbling meekly.
Suddenly, natural power, effervescent, exploding before my eyes. The Kraken– it’s mist leaving me breathless, cowering in it’s wake.
My elders of Lagonna shudder at this fearsome foe.
Remarks the Simic mage “GG”
The cruelty! the impetuous knave has dared speak this?  Surely too soon, but how?
Prayers yet unanswered, redoubled. A murmur into a shout, “ONE TIME DEALER”
A surge of brine bathes, engulfs me. The kraken approaches.
The mage commands “Monstrify!”.
My final hour looms, the icy breath of death upon my neck. Goosebumps.
But wait! The mage buckles, crumples, lacking power. The kraken remails mortal.
A clatter of hooves, centaurs rush to my aid. One pulled to sea, the other slung strongly aside, surely drowned, devoured– or worse.
Battle and hope lost?
A shot. White, jagged, hot! What fortune from the sky! The kraken left scarred by lighting, recedes into the murky abyss. Emboldened, I press for victory.
The Simic mage, reduced to nothing, wretched, barely clinging to hope.
I prolong his suffering, his suspense, under my boot. Before you see your spell summoner, I say “GG”.
I call that one “Don’t you ever, EVER give me the premature GG you worthless piece of garbage.”

– Brian

Rooster Draft

On episode 207, we talked about a bunch of alternate Limited formats, one of which being Rooster Draft, developed by Ryan Spain. Here is the document we referenced on the show, written by Ryan:

Rooster Draft

Overview: Rooster Draft (a mash-up of “Rochester” Draft and “Booster” Draft) combines aspects of Draft and Sealed Deck in a two-player Magic: The Gathering Format

Equipment: 8 Magic: The Gathering Boosters, basic lands (If boosters from multiple sets are used, two identical groups of four are ideal: AABB/AABB, or AABC/AABC where A is a large set and B/C are small sets)

The Draft

1)      Decide randomly who is Player A and who is Player B

2)      Open 4 boosters, and place them face down on the table without looking at them

3)      Flip over cards from each booster until the three uncommons, the rare, and, if applicable, the foil and/or double-faced card are revealed (Set aside the basic land and insert)

4)      Player A chooses one of the four piles of uncommons and rares

5)      Player B chooses two of the remaining three piles of uncommon and rares

6)      Player A takes the remaining pile

7)      Repeat steps 2-6 with the other four boosters, but swapping Player A and Player B

8)      Reveal four of the eight piles of commons

9)      Player A takes one of the four piles of commons

10)   Player B takes two of the remaining three piles of commons

11)   Player A takes the remaining pile

12)   Repeat steps 8-11 with the remaining four piles of commons, swapping Player A and Player B

Table talk during the draft is encouraged, especially between players with mixed experience levels.

Play

Build 30-card minimum decks, adding as many basic lands as you wish, and play a best of three match.

Rooster Lite: Skip steps 8-12, and instead take the unseen commons with each set of rares and uncommons you draft. Don’t look at the commons until the draft is over. This is good for less-experienced Limited players or when you have less time..

Companion to Episode 206

On episode 206 Marshall and I discussed our tier lists for Theros commons.  These lists represent where we are at right now in our evaluations.  Within a tier, we’re fairly willing to select based on the demands of our deck, be that mana curve, creature count or the need for ways to interact with our opponent.  Usually, we will not dip down a tier if a card in a higher tier is available.  We didn’t spend too much time ordering the cards within the tiers, so please don’t read too much into that.  We also did not make the tiers comparable across colors.  There are definitely going to be corner cases where you’ll want to make a large divergence.  Also, we recognize that people have “pet” cards that really fit into the color in the way you like to draft that color.

**This is intended to be a companion to the show, not a substitute for it!**  We bounced back and forth between our lists, so we created the necessity to post here for ease of access.  What we say in the show will be far more useful than just the lists themselves.

Origins of Elmer

Elmer has been around for a while now, but some of the more recent listeners of the show may not be familiar with everyone’s favorite elk. Former LR co-host Ryan Spain took a minute to explain. Thanks Ryan!

The Origin of Elmer

Nothing kills an inside joke quite like explaining it, but enough questions have come up about the ongoing “Elmer” joke on Limited Resources that some details are clearly required for newer listeners.

First, some context: besides being a creature type on several Magic cards, elk serve an interesting purpose in a lot of non-elk card art. Have you ever heard of “scale birds?” This is when an artist includes some birds in creature-card artwork to give a sense of the size of the creature, particularly when there is nothing else in the environment to provide that context.

In a similar vein, prey animals like elk are often shown in peril in Magic artwork to give a sense of the scale of danger happening on the card—a “peril elk” if you will. At the 1:04 mark of the M13 set review (Episode #139), when discussing the card Downpour, Marshall notes that the peril elk in the artwork is pretty sad-looking, and is in deep trouble.

In the next episode (#141 “Speaking with Sadin”), the first card in the second crack-a-pack on the show is Downpour (at 0:43:10). Marshall reaffirms the sadness of the elk’s plight, and says, “Poor guy, we should name him.” Marshall ultimately grants naming rights to the guest on the show, Steve Sadin. Steve comes up with “Elmer” (at 0:43:55).

Once named for his appearance in the Downpour art, it became amusing for Jon and Marshall to assume that the many peril elk in Magic artwork are not a series of different elk, but are actually all Elmer, whose life of adventure and danger is being chronicled in the ongoing art of Magic: The Gathering cards. Marshall, Jon, and listeners now look for (and root for) Elmer on Magic cards as he faces the trials and tribulations of living in the multiverse. Elmer has his moments of glory, too!

Brian, for some reason, thinks the Elmer joke is dumb. He’s probably swimming upstream on this one…

(It’s worth noting that Elmer must be a Planeswalker for him to show up in all of the planes like he does. Hmmmm…what would the planeswalker card Elmer, Peril Elk do?)

(It’s also worth noting that at the 0:42:12 mark of episode #141, right before Steve names Elmer, Marshall dubs Deadly Recluse the “Green Doom Blade,” which has since become widely-adopted slang for the 1/2 spider. Two Limited Resources slang origin stories within a minute of each other on the same podcast episode!)

Jon’s Signoff From Episode 200

For those into such things, Jon has kindly(?) shared the full version of his signoff from the 200th episode of Limited Resources. For a peek behind the (admittedly creepy) curtain and into the inner workings of a Loucks-infested brain, read on.

Welcome to the 200th annual limited resources draft day here at the pacific northwest card kingdom draft table. It’s a beautiful day to draft, and drafters of all kinds have shown up to sling spells against the toughest competitors. The players are now sitting down in their seats, clearly nervous for the draft ahead. We’ll be over the shoulder of Marshall “Stinky Britches” Sutcliffe for this draft, assuming his chair manages to hold. The table judge is awaiting the signal from the head judge. He looks ready…any moment now…waiting…waiting…

BANG! And the pack is cracked! Pack one pick one, Stinky Britches is taking his time out of the gate, nothing great in the commons, nothing great in the uncommons, what’s in the paaaack what’s in the paaack OHHHH! and it’s a stinker for stinky in the rare slot!

He takes the green dudrle in the uncommon slot, picks up another solid green card on the second pick, splits into red a little bit, picking up momentum, he checks his signals, looking good, picking up some steam as the first pack comes to a close solidly in RG,

BAM! And they’re into the second pack! This time he’s right to the back…what’s in the paaaack what’s in the paaaack! OH AND IT’S THE BEST MYTHIC IN THE SET! But it’s blue! What is stinky britches going to do in this scenario? Will he set off into the muddy waters of a third color? His father was a mudder, his mother was a mudder, OH AND HE TAKES IT! And it looks like he’s able to follow up with a solid blue uncommon in the second pick

…and oh no! What’s this?! He’s getting cut from the inside! There’s not a single playable red or green card in pick three…or pick four! He’s evenly split ladies and gentlemen! Stinky is riding the dilu horse!

…Oh, and it looks like there’s a jam-up on the other side of the table! We’ve got a jam up! The table judge has hoofed it over, and it looks like somebody miscounted the cards. There’s a missing card in this draft! There’s some yelling, the drafter says neigh and thank the lucky horse shoe, it looks like they were able to rectify this dicey situation.

…and we’re coming along into the home stretch. Speaking of stretching, Britches is going to be reaching for enough playables here in the third pack if he decides to stick to two colors. They’re opening the third pack, looking to the back…

…what’s in the paaaack what’s in the paaaack – oh we’ve got a money rare! We’ve got a money black mythic! Will stinky britches play for the gold or take the side purse? He’s already hurting for playables, you can tell he’s thinking about it, AND HE TAKES THE MYTHIC! He’s galloping off to money town! Luckily it looks like he’s taking a powerful green uncommon in pick two. He’s got a lot of tabling to do here…

…by my count he’s got his twentieth playable now sticking to blue green…there’s his twenty first….oh it’s neck and neck here at the end…and he wiffs in that pack…the crowd is on their feet…escaped with a twenty-second playable there…oh and where’s the twenty third, can he table the twenty third? It would be in this pack…it would be here…

WHAT’S IN THE PAAAACK WHAT’S IN THE PAAAAAAACK IT’S A PLAYABLE! IT’S A PLAYABLE! OH MY GOD LADIES AND GENTLEMENT YOU HAVE JUST WITNESSED HISTORY HERE TODAY! STINKY BRITCHES ESCAPES WITH A RESPECTABLE TWO COLOR TWENTY THREE CARD DECK, AND HE WON THE SIDE PURSE! His mother has GOT to be smiling right now.

Thanks for watching another fantastic draft here at the 200th annual limited resources draft day. Quit horsing around and we’ll see you next time!

Exclusive Theros Preview Card – Centaur Battlemaster

We love a big, green creature here at LR, and WotC has delivered just that for our exclusive Theros preview card! Take a look at the lastest beef delivery vessel from our friends in R&D:

9-12-2013-Limited-Resources-Centaur-Battlemaster

A quick Vanilla Test reveals a pretty unexciting 3/3 body for a relatively demanding 3GG casting cost. Another quick glance reveals that this card is an uncommon, so the ceiling is pretty high. It doesn’t disappoint.

The Heroic “ability” is one that has a lot of fluctuation. One some cards it’s tuned down a bit for power level reasons. On others — like this one — it’s ratcheted up a bunch. A full three +1/+1 counters are added to this guy every time you cast a spell that targets it! It’s like getting a free Giant Growth that stays on the creature!

That means you can run it out on turn five, and if you get to untap, you could threaten to attack with a 6/6 or even a 9/9 beater. Pretty insane.

The downside? It doesn’t have evasion, and if you don’t find a spell to target it with, it’s an unexciting snidd.

Still, it seems like Theros will be rife with ways to target this guy and I love the raw goodness of huge ground-pounders in the green section of the color pie. Now to just find the right thing to bestow on this guy…

– Marshall
